Keeping Igniters Dry After a Boil-Over
In one sentence
Drying an igniter out is the ten patient minutes between a pan that went over and a burner that has stopped lighting — the difference, most of the time, between a cooktop that recovers on its own and a component somebody pays to have replaced.

A wet electrode and a dead one sound exactly alike. Both leave the cooktop ticking away at a burner that will not catch, and the noise is convincing enough that people order parts over it. The difference is time: moisture on the ceramic offers the spark an easier path than the little air gap it is supposed to jump, and once that moisture has gone the spark goes back where it belongs. Nothing below needs a tool you do not already own, and none of it is urgent — hurrying is what turns a wet burner into a scratched one.

Turn everything off and let it cool
Knobs to off, the burner that overflowed and the ones either side of it too. A spill on a hot burner steams straight into the places you are about to dry, and the pieces you will be lifting are cast iron. Give it an hour before you touch any of it.

Lift the grate, the cap and the head
On a sealed burner they come away in your hands, with no tools and no force. Set them down in the order they left the cooktop. Underneath sits the burner base and, at its edge, the slim pale spike the spark comes from. That spike is what all of this is about.

Dry the ceramic, then dry around it
A dry cloth first, wound over a fingertip, working the whole spike and the fine tip at the end of it. Where the surface feels tacky rather than wet, a little rubbing alcohol on the cloth lifts the film and flashes off by itself. Never a scouring pad, never a blade, and never anything warm held near a gas burner.

Leave it alone, then try one burner
Put nothing back while it is damp. Give it the afternoon with the pieces off, then reassemble, seat the cap flat and turn that one knob. If it lights, the answer was water all along. If it still ticks blindly with everything dry and square, this has stopped being housekeeping.

Can I speed it up with a hairdryer?
